The high-end British retailer has been facing an increase in competition from discount chains such as Lidl and Aldi that have been increasing their market share. Nevertheless, Waitrose still ranks first in a recent survey conducted by Market Force Information on customer opinions of seven supermarket chains. The survey involved 4,300 customers who rated supermarkets based on their assortment, layout, and cleanliness.

Waitrose has taken a number of measures to safeguard customers and staff during the coronavirus outbreak. Customers are asked to send only one person shopping and to wear a mask or scarf. Hand sanitiser stations are also located in the front of every shop. Waitrose offers the Volunteer's Shopping Card for shoppers who have self-isolation that allows family and friends to collect their orders on their behalf.
