Customers can order and receive the delivery of groceries, pantry items, fresh produce, deli goods such as meats, dairy organic and natural food and prepared meals, office and school products, personal care items and alcohol at certain markets. Customers can also pick up their orders at over 200 Peapod pickup points, many of which are located inside brick-and-mortar stores operated by Ahold USA like Stop & Shop.

Peapod uses the data it gathers to identify brands and products that customers like, and allows them to recommend similar items. The system lets shoppers look through everything in their shopping cart at the same time and also make use of search filters to narrow down results. Because shopping for groceries is a habit-driven activity, the Skokie-based company makes use of data to predict which products the consumer will buy, pushing those items toward the top of the list.

The service is based around its drivers, also known as brand ambassadors. Bienkowski explained to Food Dive that food is an emotional experience. Being able to communicate directly with the person who delivers the order makes it more enjoyable and convenient. When customers see their groceries delivered by the driver they know that the order is safe with the driver.

Peapod as an early pioneer in online grocery shopping, has invested in technology to ensure that it can remain competitive against its rivals. But it hasn't been able to make as significant a dent in the industry as other grocery delivery services such as Instacart and Amazon Fresh. But the 28-year veteran of the online grocery delivery wars is working to boost its competitiveness by expanding its offerings on e-commerce. It has launched a brand new mobile experience based on the PRISM platform, which is proprietary to Ahold Delhaize USA, and its own websites.
