In some markets, customers can place orders and pick up food items, pantry products fresh produce, deli items, meats and dairy, organic and natural foods as well as prepared meals, office and school supplies delivered. They can also pick up alcohol and personal care items. Customers also can pick up orders at more than 200 Peapod pickup locations, the majority of which are connected to Ahold USA's brick and mortar stores such as Stop & Shop.

Peapod uses data to track the brands that are popular with shoppers and which is best for online grocery shopping products which allows the online retailer to suggest similar items. The system allows shoppers to view everything in their shopping cart at once and apply filters to narrow down results. Because shopping for groceries is a habit-driven activity, the Skokie, Illinois-based company utilizes data to predict the products the shopper would buy and then push them to the top of the list.

The company's service is based on its drivers, who are also known as brand ambassadors. Bienkowski explained to Food Dive that food is an emotional experience. Being able to interact directly with the person who is delivering the order makes it more pleasant and convenient. And unlike many e-commerce deliveries that customers receive, when they see the driver with their groceries, they can be confident that the order is in good hands.

As the first innovator in online grocery shopping, Peapod has invested in technology to stay competitive against its competitors. It hasn't made as much of an impact on the industry as other grocery-delivery services like Instacart or Amazon Fresh. However, the 28-year veteran of the battle for online grocery delivery is trying to increase its competitiveness by expanding its e-commerce offerings. It has launched a brand new mobile experience built on the PRISM platform, which is proprietary to Ahold Delhaize USA, and its own websites.
